Date1933
Extent3 items
DescriptionSilent footage of Revived Greek Dance by the Ginner-Mawer School of Dance and Drama recorded at several outdoor performances at Hyde Park and Regent's Park in London in 1933. The film features Ruby Ginner, Irene Mawer and their company of dancers including Nancy Sherwood and Pauline Grant. Ginner's husband, Alexander Dyer, also appears in some backstage footage. There is also a list of dances performed in the film written by Susan Mitchell-Smith in 1991. Due to the age of the film some of the movements appear faster than they would have been originally.
Filmed by Grace Lindo.
One of the pieces is In Praise of Artemis, the Huntress, choreographed by Ruby Ginner and performed by students of the Ginner-Mawer School. Nancy Sherwood is the votary of Artemis who performs the dance with the double-headed spear. Also shown are girl athletes and maidens of the reeds. Ruby Ginner is at the top of the steps.

The original cinefilm was transferred onto VHS format in December 1989 and onto DVD (as part of the Pioneer Women: early British modern dancers project) in November 2008). The original film belongs to Susan Mitchell-Smith.
There are two VHS videotapes and one DVD.
