Extracts from a letter of Shepard's and his drawings appear in the book on the following pages, 188, 282, 125, 137, 140, 148, 185, 213, 218, 229, 244, 258, 268: he is thanked in the introductory note. Opposite p.188 there is a piece of dried grass next to the colour illustration drawn by Shepard entitled Zillebeke 1917.
Inside front cover and front flyleaf contain a précis of the service of the 105 Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery [which Shepard commanded] in ink in Shepard's handwriting, from formation in 1916 to disbandment in 1918. Shepard has also annotated other parts of the text of the book.

Physical DescriptionThe book is large and in poor shape: the spine is loose, and fraying at the front cover and at the bottom; pages are coming loose; and it may have been affected by damp. The cloth cover is frayed and there are loose threads.
