DescriptionStudent notebook, inscribed on the front cover with Shepard's addresses and the date he began sketching in the book. Contains a variety of pencil and ink sketches: studies of people, buildings, animals, and objects; caricatures; landscapes; and [initial drawings for commercial illustrations?]. Annotated drawings include: "Saturday night whos [sic] got the key" (humorous cartoon of [himself and his studiomate?] with groceries); "Brown should look where he is going" [for TOM BROWN'S SCHOOLDAYS?]; "Fancy Maid V" [a cow, used repeatedly in later works]; "Greenwich Sept 13th 1901" (a pencil sketch of police officers or firemen); a technically oriented drawing of an artillery piece; "Robert Taber Novr 15th 1902"; "Constance Collier Nov 15/02"; "Mr Beerbohm Tree Nov. 15 /02". Possibly the most useful sketchbook for exhibitions.
