TitleWWI: Maps of France
DateOct 1915-Apr 1918
Extent7 maps
DescriptionTopographical maps of France with roads, settlements, and other physical features marked.
a) 1:40,000 map sheet 36B, edition 6 (dated 1916), south west Bethune
b) 1:20,000 trench map sheet 57C SW, edition 5A (dated Jan 1917, has a sketch of [a road junction?] on the back in indelible pencil)
c) 1:10,000 trench map "Longueval", edition 3B (dated May 1916)
d) 1:100,000 map of the area around Amiens (dated 1916)
e) 1:40,000 trench map "Albert", combining sheets 57D SE, 57C SW, 62 NE and 62D NW (dated 1918). Handwritten notes giving the locations of 'C.H.S Grave' [this matches the location of Cyril Harry Shepard's grave] and 'B. Robinson Grave'.
f) trench map sheet 51B SW, edition 3A (dated Feb 1917)
g) 1:20,000 trench map "Montauban" (dated 1916), 'correct as to 2 July 1916'

All but the first three are annotated in Shepard's handwriting. The Amiens and Albert maps have numbers in the margins [probably distances to targets], while the 51B SW and Montauban maps are extensively annotated with troop positions and movements. All the maps are backed with fabric netting.
Physical DescriptionAll the maps are dirty, fragile, and somewhat brittle (and therefore breaking along their fold lines): one some, notably 51B SW and Albert, the netting is coming loose from the paper of the map. These maps should be stored flat.
