ActivityUS dancer, choreographer, composer, designer, teacher, and director. In 1948 appointed director of New York's Henry Street Playhouse; formed the Nikolais Dance Theater, first touring Europe in 1965; in 1978 invited by the French government to form the Centre National de Danse Contemporaine at Angers; in 1989 Nikolais Dance Theater merged to form Murray Louis and Nikolais Dance; awarded the US National Medal of Arts in 1987
