HistoryAlan Alexander Milne was born in Kilburn, London on 18th January 1882 to John Vine Milne and Sarah Marie Milne (nee Heginbotham). Milne attended Westminster School and won a scholarship for Trinity College, Cambridge where he graduated with a bachelors degree in Mathematics. While at Cambridge he edited and wrote for the student magazine 'Granta', often collaborating with his brother Kenneth under the initials AKM. Milne became a contributor and later an assistant edititor at Punch magazine.

During the First World War he served as an officer in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, and later in the Royal Corps of Signals. In 1916 he was injured at the Battle of the Somme and was invalided back to England. He was then recruited into Military Intelligence to write propoganda articles for MI 7b between 1916 and 1918, and was discharged in 1919.

Milne married Dorothy 'Daphne' de Selincourt in 1913 and their son Christopher Robin Milne was born in 1920. In 1925, Milne bought Cotchford Farm in Hartfield, East Sussex.

Between 1903 and 1925 Milne published 18 plays and 3 novels, including 'The Red House Mystery' in 1922. His son, Christopher Robin Milne, was born in 1920 and in 1924 Milne produced a collection of children's poems called 'When We Were Very Young' which were illustrated by the Punch staff cartoonist E H Shepard. A collection of short stories for children called 'Gallery of Children', and other stories that became part of the Winnie-the-Pooh books, were first published in 1925.

Milne wrote four stories for the company Minerva Filoms, which were all filmed in 1920. They were 'The Bump', 'Twice Two', 'Five Pound Reward' and 'Bookworms'.

'Winnie-the-Pooh' was published in 1926, followed by 'The House at Pooh Corner' in 1928. A second collection of nursery rhymes, 'Now We are Six' was published in 1927. All three books were illustrated by E H Shepard. Milne also published four plays between 1926 and 1928.

In 1930, Milne adapted Kenneth Grahame's novel 'The Wind in the Willows' for the stage as 'Toad of Toad Hall'.

During the Second World War, Milne was Captain of the British Home Guard in Hartfield and Forest Row. He retired to Cotchfield Farm after he suffered a stroke. He was left an invalid after brain surgery in 1952. Milne died in 1956, aged 74
