HistoryMethuen Publishing Ltd was founded in 1889 by Sir Algernon Methuen and began publishing in 1892. Methuen was a teacher and he began to publish his own textbooks under the heading Methuen & Co. In 1982 Methuen published Rudyard Kipling's 'Barrack-Roome Ballads', and was soon publishing books by Marie Corelli, Hilaire Belloc, Robert Louis Stevenson, Oscar Wilde and Edgar Rice Burroughs.

Methuen became a limited liability company in 1910 and E V Lucas and G E Webster joined Sir Algernon Methuen on the board of directors. In 1920 Methuen published an English translation of Albert Einstein's 'Relativity, the Special and the General Theory: A Popular Exposition'

The novelist Edward Verrall Lucas ran the firm from 1924 to 1928. Lucas had gained a lot of knowledge of children's literature at the publisher Grant Richards and he soon signed a number of children's authors to Methuen, including A A Milne and Kenneth Grahame, along with illustrators such as W Heath Robinson and E H Shepard. By the 1920s Methuen were publishing work by Anthony Hope, G K Chesterton, Henry James, D H Lawrence, T S Eliot, Ruth Manning-Sanders, Hergé and The Arden Shakespeare series.

In 1958 Methuen was part of the conglomerate Associated Book Publishers. For the majority of the 1970s Methuen was commonly known as Eyre Methuen following its absorption of the Eyre & Spottiswoode firm. After changing hands twice in the 80s and 90s, the company bought itself out in 1998.

The rights to Methuen's children's books belong to the Egmont Group.
