HistoryIn 1949 John Gregory and Barbara Vernon (Gregory) opened their ballet school: The School of Russian Ballet. The school had a strong emphasis on the traditional Russian ballet style as taught by Nicolai Legat and his wife Nadia Nicolaeva-Legat. John Gregory managed to have the school recognised as an educational establishment, meaning the school was able to take pupils funded by local education authorities. The School of Russian Ballet became affiliated with the Federation of Russian Classical Ballet (which was formed in 1950). John Gregory was the secretary and both John and Barbara were examiners of the Federation. Other schools affiliated with the Federation: Janet Cranmore School; Gabrielle Davis School; Flora Fairbairn School; Maureen School; Maria Zybina School. Both the School of Russian Ballet and the Federation of Russian Classical Ballet had the support of famous Russian dancers: Igor Schwezoff; Mathilde Kschesinska; and Tamara Karsavina. These Russian ballet dancers made appearances at Federation performances.

The school was originally named the The School of Russian Ballet and changed its name in 1964.

The school closed in 1968.
General ContextHarlequin Ballet, along with the School, was managed by the Harlequin Dance Company Limited, later the Harlequin Ballet Company Trust.
