| Description | The Carol-Lynne Moore Collection is an archival collection and research resource assembled by the American movement analyst, consultant and lecturer Carol-Lynne Moore. It consists of Moore's own professional archive, generated over the course of her career, supplemented with a wider body of documentary evidence and research material relating to the history and development of Movement Pattern Analysis, and to the wider field of Laban movement studies more generally.
At present, the collection comprises:
- papers relating to research into Action Profiling and Movement Pattern Analysis, including studies of reliability and validity, and material relating to Moore's work with Brenda Connors of the United States Naval War College;
- papers relating to the history and development of practitioner training in Action Profiling and Movement Pattern Analysis, including training materials developed by Moore and papers relating to the MPACC Programme at Columbia College Chicago;
- papers relating to the British movement theorist and management consultant Warren Lamb and the organisation Action Profilers International.
The collection additionally includes explanatory notes and background material written by Moore at the time of the collection's deposit with University of Surrey Archives and Special Collections. These have been catalogued as part of the collection because of the valuable context they provide. |

| Administrative History | Carol-Lynne Moore (known as Carol-Lynne Moore Rose, c.1975-1980) is an American movement analyst, consultant and lecturer. Moore is known for her work in the field of Movement Pattern Analysis (known as Action Profiling prior to 1992), and worked closely with the British management consultant and movement theorist Warren Lamb (1923-2014).
Moore studied Dance at Southern Methodist University, receiving a B.F.A. degree in 1973, and she was subsequently certified as an Effort/Shape Movement Analyst in 1976. She later undertook doctoral research at the University of Surrey into the choreutic theory of Rudolf Laban, and was awarded a PhD in 1999. Moore has written extensively on Movement Pattern Analysis and the work of Laban, and her publications include 'Beyond words: movement observation and analysis' (1998, co-authored with Kaoru Yamamoto), 'Movement and making decisions: the body-mind connection in the workplace' (2005), and 'The harmonic structure of movement, music and dance according to Rudolf Laban: an examination of his unpublished writings and drawings' (2009).
Training, movement education, and consultancy has been a key focus of Moore's career. Moore joined the faculty of the Dance Notation Bureau in 1977, and served on the faculty and staff of the newly-formed Laban/Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies between 1978 and 1982. From 1977 onwards, she received training in Action Profiling from Lamb, and by the early 1980s Moore was herself involved in the delivery of training alongside Lamb and Pamela Ramsden. From the 1980s onwards she delivered training and consultancy work through Warren Lamb Associates (of Boulder, Colorado). Since 2014 Moore has worked through the MoveScape Center, of which she is the Director.
Moore joined the professional body Action Profilers International following its formation in 1980. Moore was closely involved with the running of the organisation, including serving on the governing body of the organisation in various positions, until 1992 when a dispute over theory led to the resignation of Lamb, Moore, and others from Action Profilers International.
In 1991, Moore co-founded and led the professional organisation Motus Humanus with Charlotte Honda and Kaoru Yamamoto. Following the split within Action Profilers International, Motus Humanus became the certifying body for Lamb's method of movement analysis, now termed Movement Pattern Analysis. In 2013, Moore was named a founding trustee of the Warren Lamb Trust alongside Jagriti Ritu Chander and James McBride. Motus Humanus ceased operations in 2017, and the Trust took over responsibility for the professional registration of Movement Pattern Analysis consultants.
Moore has also been active in the field of movement studies research. In addition to her published research, notable work in this area has included a series of collaborations with Brenda Connors of the United States Naval War College under the aegis of the Body Leads and ALEADMOVE projects; the work of these projects is well-represented within the collection. |
