| Description | The sub-collection comprises material selected for inclusion in ‘E.H. Shepard: An Illustrator’s War’, an exhibition held at The House of Illustration, London, 9 October 2015 to 10 January 2016. It relates to E.H. Shepard’s early life and his military service, from his engagement to his return from Italy after the First World War. The collection consists mostly of drawings created by Shepard, both commercially for magazines and personally during military service in the First World War. Also included are photographs depicting life before and during the War, and several of Shepard’s belongings. |
| Arrangement | These items were selected from the wider holdings of The Shepard Trust for inclusion in the exhibition, and as such there was no original order to the material. An arrangement was therefore devised during cataloguing, based on the types, formats and chronology of the material. |

| Custodial History | Following the end of the 'E.H. Shepard: An Illustrator’s War' exhibition in January 2016, the items comprising this sub-collection were transferred to University of Surrey Archives and Special Collections on a temporary basis. This was formalised as a long-term loan in 2017. |
| Publication Note | Prior to their inclusion in the exhibition 'E.H. Shepard: An Illustrator's War', items from the collection were used in the research for James Campbell's book, 'Shepard's War - E.H. Shepard: The Man Who Drew Winnie-the-Pooh' (2015), London: Michael O'Mara Books Ltd. |
