History | Mary Eleanor Jessie Shepard was born the 25 December 1909 to Florence Eleanor and Ernest Howard Shepard. Mary graduated from the Slade School of Art and illustrated a series of seven Mary Poppins book by P L Travers between 1933 and 1988.
Her parents also referred to her by the nickname 'Puss'.
In 1937 she married E V Knox, a friend and colleague of her father's. For work she was known by her maiden name, and was only known as Mary Knox outside of the publishing world. E V Knox was the inspiration for Mary's illustrations of George Banks, the father of the children in Mary Poppins. E V Knox died in 1971.
She died in London on 4 September 2000 aged 90. |
