HistoryAnn Hutchinson Guest was born in New York City in 1918. During the 1930s, she trained in dance and Labanotation at the Jooss-Leeder School at Dartington Hall. She returned to New York following during World War II, where she danced with the Welland Lathrop Company and in musics on Broadway. Gues was one of the foundeds of the Dance Notation Bureau in New York in 1940. She served as the Bureau's Director until 1961 when she moved to London.In 1962 she married the dance historia Ivor Forbes Guest. In 1967 she founded the Language of Dance Centre in London. She later founded the Language of Dance Center in Connecticut in 1997.

Ann Hutchinson Guest's research interests include Labanotation, Motif Notation and other notation systems. She has published extensively on the subject and has been a member of many organisations relating to dance and notation, including the International Council of Kinetography Laban. She has been awarded honorary doctorates from Marygrove College in Detroit, Michigan and Ohio State University. In 1997 she received the 'Outstanding Contribution to Dance Research' award from the Congress on Research in Dance, and in 1998 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for Dance Studies.
