DescriptionThe collection consists of the personal documents remaining after Shepard donated drawings and sketches to the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Cartoon Archive: personal, business, and fan correspondence; personal and family papers; personal ephemera; copies of books he wrote or illustrated; appointment diaries; sketchbooks; photographs; pencil, ink, and watercolour drawings; oil paintings; manuscript material; press cuttings, sales catalogues, and magazines. Dates and other information given in square brackets are provided by the cataloguer, usually from context.
Custodial_HistoryThe collection was donated to the University of Surrey by E. H. and Norah Carroll Shepard in 1974. Norah Carroll Shepard bequeathed or donated additional items at the time of her death. Dr. Patricia Dark catalogued the collection during the period January 2008- July 2009.

The Shepard Trust collection comprises artwork from World War I , ref ST.

Sketches and drawings related to Winnie-the-Pooh at the Victoria and Albert Museum (donated 1969); drawings and cartoons created for PUNCH at the British Cartoon Archive, University of Kent at Canterbury (donated c.1970); drawings and paintings relating to World War I at the Imperial War Museum, London (donated by Norah Carroll Shepard, 1976); and small numbers of drawings, letters, etc, at: the University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS; the Australian War Memorial, Canberra, ACT; and Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI. Other items were painted by Shepard on commission or sold during his lifetime and are in (generally unidentified) private hands. The final inked drawings for WINNIE-THE-POOH and THE WIND IN THE WILLOWS are generally held by the books' publishers, Egmont (in the UK: the successor to Methuen Publishing Ltd's IPR) and Dutton (in the US).

Physical DescriptionOlder items may be printed on poor-quality paper. Sketchbooks, diaries, and notebooks often have fragile bindings. Some drawings have been framed for display. Newsclippings are generally old and brittle. Manuscript material may be unorganised, loose sheets of paper.

Copyright in correspondence to Shepard would be vested in the author or his/her heirs or successors.
