Date[1900s?-1970]
Extent40 volumes and 50 loose items
DescriptionSketchbooks used by E. H. Shepard. Most are black imitation leather, and contain a variety of rough and polished pencil and pen sketches. Descriptions of individual volumes note the general subject material covered and any especially noteworthy individual sketches. Very few give any indication of date, and it is likely that Shepard occasionally drew in a sketchbook he had previously used years earlier. All dates should, therefore, be treated as rough estimates.
Related MaterialSimilar material can be found in the series of original artworks and reporductions, EHS/G and EHS/G R. EHS/A and EHS/H (personal papers and mauscripts) contain material that may complement or complete the memoirs in the sketchbooks.
Physical DescriptionMost sketchbooks have perforated pages and fragile bindings. The number of loose pages associated with a given volume is noted in the description.
