DescriptionFounded by four Royal Ballet dancers in 1984, this was a small scale company that produced "new work from a classical starting point". The company aimed: to promote new work by young choreographers, composers and designers working in collaboration; to fill the need for a British modern dance company working from a classical starting point; and to create new audiences for classical dance by providing a flexible company able to perform in smaller venues.Its mos t important commission was Kenneth MacMillan's Sea of Troubles (1988) based on Hamlet.

The founding members and co-directors of the company are Michael Batchelor, Susan Crow, Jennifer Jackson and Sheila Styles. In addition to performing, the members of Dance Advance created an Educational Outreach Programme that could provide classes, workshops and demonstrations for all members of the community.

The catalogued material includes the Memordanum and Articles of Association; financial records; correspondence concerning television productions, performances and touring; Arts Council applications; publicity material, posters and theatre programmes; press cuttings and reviews; records relating to outreach and education projects; legal documents; and videos.
