Name of Creatordance and the Child international (daCi); 1978-present; membership organisation
DescriptionA non-profit membership association, Dance and The Child International (daCi) promotes the growth and development of dance for children on an international basis. The organisation was founded during the conference 'Dance and the Child', held at the University of Alberta, Canada, in July 1978. The first meeting of daCi's Provisional Steering Group took place in 1979, the year the organisation was invited to join UNESCO's Conseil International de la Danse (CID). In 1980, daCi became a fully constituted branch of CID.

The association is governed by the Executive Committee (8-10 elected members), the Advisory Board (made up of the Executive Committee and the National Representatives), and the General Council (all daCi members). The committee and board hold biennial business meetings. The General Council meets at the international conference, which is held every three years in a different country. The international conference is an opportunity for members to share ideas and for young people to be involved in workshops and performances.

The international organisation publishes a newsletter and the proceedings of the international conferences. The national chapters organise dance events in their own countries, and several produce a newsletter for their members.

The daCi Archive principally concerns the organisation at its international level: its governing bodies and its triennial conferences. The archive documents meetings of the Executive Committee, the Advisory Board, and the General Council. It also contains minutes of the Provisional Steering Group, which governed daCi from 1979 to 1982 before the present governing structure was in place. Other files consist of correspondence from the 1990s and 2000s between members of the Executive.
The triennial international conferences are documented through their proceedings; in files of papers covering planning, administration, publicity, programme, etc.; and for some, by posters, photographs, videotapes, and performance programmes. The archive holds materials for the following conferences:
- 'Dance and the Child: the Child as Performer, the Child as Spectator, the Child as Creator', 25-27 July 1978, Edmonton, Canada
- 'Children and Youth Dancing', 16-20 August 1982, Stockholm, Sweden
- 'Dance - the New Zealand Experience', 25-31 August 1985, Auckland College of Education, New Zealand
- 'Young People Dancing: An International Perspective', 19-28 July 1988, Roehampton Institute, Froebel College, London
- 'Roots and Wings', 29 July-3 August 1991 in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA
- 'Kindle the Fire', 12-20 July 1994, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia
- 'The Call of Forest and Lakes', 28 July-3 August 1997, Kuopio, Finland
The archive's other area of focus is the administration and activities of the UK Chapter, which was active from 1985 to 2001. While other national chapters are represented in the archive, the files tend to consist of letters between the National Respresentative and Mollie Davies, a member of the UK Chapter, when she was on the Executive Committee.
The archive also holds daCi's constitution, papers concerning the Conseil International de la Danse, Sherry Shapiro's oral history project, and newsletters and journals published by the international organisation and by some national chapters.

There are an additional 4 boxes and 2 folders of uncatalogued material which has been received since the compilation of this catalogue. This includes meeting minutes, newslettters, accounts, publicity and membership information. If you require further information, please email archives@surrey.ac.uk.
ArrangementMaterial arranged at time of cataloguing according to the format-based classification scheme which was then in use by the National Resource Centre for Dance.

For the most part, the papers files are arranged under these subject headings:
o Conseil International de la Danse (CID)
o daCi Constitution and By-laws
o Executive Committee, Advisory Board \ Correspondence
o Executive Committee, Advisory Board \ Meetings
o International Conference \ [town, country, year]
o International Research
o General Council \ Meetings
o National Chapters \ [country]

The subject categories have undergone several revisions during the course of work on the archive, some changes suggested by the NRCD and others by the daCi Executive. Changes were made both before and after the files were catalogued on computer in 1998. Therefore, earlier published catalogues of the archive will no longer match the archive as presented online (reference numbers and file titles have been changed, and some files were combined).

Custodial HistoryIn 1991, daCi approached the National Resource Centre for Dance about housing its archive. Advised by staff from the NRCD and University of Surrey Archive, two members of daCi's UK Chapter collected, sorted and categorised materials, first from the UK Chapter, then from the organisers of the international conferences and from Executive Committee and Advisory Board members. The materials were deposited at the NRCD in 1994. The UK daCi members continued to bring in small deposits, sorted and categorised, until 1999. Subsequent deposits have been sent directly to the NRCD from Peggy Downey, 2000-2005; Sharon Friedman, 2003; Leanore Ickstadt, 2006; Ann Kipling Brown, 2006. Preservation and cataloguing of the initial deposits were funded by a grant from the Follett Initiative; of deposits made 2000-2005 by the Dance Data Online project grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board.
