TitleLetter from E H Shepard to Florence Eleanor Shepard
Date23 May 1917
Extent1 paper, 1 envelope
DescriptionEHS is having a nice morning having driven one of their Officers, Lee, to the station as he is going on leave. He has been doing some shopping, including a birthday present for his wife (a real silver box with the name of the town on). Now he is basking on the grass by the river. It reminds him of St Catherines Hill at Guildford. At the back of him is the "citadel". There are a group of French girls knitting and kiddies playing. A French girl with a baby is sitting by him, "embroidering, very demurely" with "a twinkle in her eye". He has been reading the Daily Mail from May 22nd, about their own "little battle", in which Mair (new C.O) and he were on the look out for the boche. He describes the battle. A group of boche prisoners has just walked by, having been working on the roads - he says they look contented as they have an awful time in the trenches as they give them no rest.
