DescriptionErnest Howard Shepard was an illustrator known for his illustrations for the satirical magazine, Punch; the original illustrations for the Winnie-the-Pooh books by A A Milne; and the original illustrations for 'The Wind in the Willows" by Kenneth Grahame. In addition he illustrated a variety of books for adults and children and also wrote and illustated his own books, 'Ben and Brock' and 'Betsy and Joe', as well writing two memoirs, 'Drawn from Life' and 'Drawn from Memory'. He also served as an officer in France during the First World War.

The collection comprises material selected for inclusion in 'EH Shepard: An Illustrator’s War' exhibition at The House of Illustration, London, 9 October 2015 to 10 January 2016. It relates to E H Shepard's early life and his military service, from his engagement to his return from Italy after the First World War. The collection consists mostly of drawings created by E H Shepard, both commercially for magazines and personally during military service in the First World War. The collection also includes photographs depicting life before and during the War, and several of Shepard's belongings.
ArrangementThese items were gather together from the larger Shepard's Trust collection for inclusion in 'EH Shepard: An Illustrator’s War' exhibition at The House of Illustration, London, 9 October 2015 to 10 January 2016. Therefore there was no original order and during cataloguing the material was arranged by format and ordered chronologically.

Custodial HistoryMaterial was loaned directly by the Shepard Trust to the House of Illustration for its "Shepard's War Exhibition" October 2015-January 2016. After the exhibition closed it was transferred to Archives & Special Collections at the University of Surrey and later deposited there. All featured in the Shepard's War exhibition at House of Illustration. Some material also featured in exhibition at Museum Huis Doorn in the Netherlands.
Reference Numbers (T numbers) were given to the items in the collection by the House of Illustration and have been retained.
