Administrative HistoryThe first records held in the collection are for the Presentation of College Diplomas and Diplomas in Technology by Sir Harold Roxbee Cox on 29 November 1961 at Battersea College of Technology. The ceremonies continued to be held at Battersea until 1967 when the Ceremony for the Conferment of Degrees and Diplomas took place on 22 July 1967 at Central Hall, Westminster. Between 1967 and 1970 the ceremonies were held in various locations including The University Hall at Battersea, (6 January 1968), The Civic Hall , Guildford, (2 December 1968) and the Odeon Cinema, Guildford, (26 July 1969). By this date two ceremonies were held on the one day reflecting the rise in number of graduates.

Finally the ceremonies were held at Guildford Cathedral on 25 July 1970 where they continue to be held. The growth in the number of students graduating from the University of Surrey with higher and first degrees meant that, by 2006, it was necessary to have two occasions for the award of degrees throughout the year and for the ceremonies to run over two days on both of these occasions. On 15 June 2006 three separate ceremonies were held followed by a further three ceremonies on 16 June, 2006. The work of conferring the degrees is now shared between the Chancellor and the Pro-Chancellors.
