Administrative History | The representative committee of the South London Polytechnic Institutes was appointed in December 1887 after a public meeting to discuss applying to the Charity Commissioners for funds for three Polytechnic Institutes in South London. Their model was the People's Palace (later became part of Queen Mary College, University of London) and Regents Street Polytechnic (later part of the University of Westminster). The Charity Commissioners responded positively and in April 1888 the Executive Committee was appointed.
The committee was responsible for - promoting the scheme and fundraising - finding and purchasing the site of Battersea Polytechnic, settling on the site of the Albert Palace - running the competition to design the building and appointing the architect - appointing the Governing Body.
