TitlePostgraduate dissertations and theses written by students at Battersea Polytechnic and Battersea College of Technology
Date1922-1968
Extent336 dissertations
DescriptionPostgraduate research undertaken by students at Battersea and submitted to external bodies for awards including Doctor of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Science. This collection encompasses dissertations in which Battersea Polytechnic or Battersea College of Technology are credited as the student's place of study. Therefore some which appear here were awarded after the University of Surrey was founded. Dissertations from 1966-1968 which are credited to the University of Surrey are held in the University of Surrey archive, as US/F/5/1. Please note, this is not a comprehensive set of dissertations produced by Battersea students in this era.

Battersea Polytechnic was not an award bearing institution whilst Battersea College of Technology could award Diplomas in Technology (the equivalent of an undergraduate degree). Therefore undergraduate and post graduate degrees were assessed and awarded by external organisations such as the University of London.

The physical dissertations have been retained in the archive as evidence of the research work undertaken by the University of Surrey's predecessor bodies, Battersea Polytechnic and Battersea College of Technology. This research work was instrumental in first Battersea Polytechnic becoming one of the new colleges of advanced technology in 1956 and then becoming a University in 1966.
ArrangementArranged alphabetically according to author's surname.

Custodial HistoryPrior to 2018, the University of Surrey Library maintained these dissertations as part of its holdings. In 2018 the Library digitised these volumes as part of a larger project to digitise its entire holdings of PhD dissertations. The physical items were then transferred to the archive.
