History | Lilla Bauer was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1912. She was the daughter of Emil Bauer, an architect, and was one of four daughters. She became one of the principal dancers in the Ballet Jooss, Kurt Jooss's company, and performed the role of "young girl" in The Green Table in the 1930s, touring the USA and Europe. Baurer's carrer in Hungary was cut short by the Second World War. She performed a final time in 1938 and then left the country at the urging of her parents. She accompanied Ballet Jooss to England and to Dartington Hall. [Order of Service for Lilla Bauer's funeral, ref LBS/6]
