Studied at the Dalcroze School in Hellerau; joined Mary Wigman in 1921 as both a company dancer and a teacher in Mary Wigman's school; performed in the premieres of Wigman's Feier (1928) and Totenmal (1930); in 1931 went to New York to open the American branch of the Wigman school; the school evolved into the Hanya Holm studio open from 1936-1967; formed own dance group in 1936; in 1941 established the Center of the Dance in Colorado Springs; created award winning choreography for musicals Kiss Me, Kate (1948), My Fair Lady (1956) and Camelot (1960); in 1961 appointed head of the dance department of New York Musical Theater Academy
