Administrative HistoryThe Academic Board was established in 1949 as a sub-committee of the Governing Body. It was composed of the London University representatives appointed to the Governing Body, the Principal, the Heads of Departments and two representatives of the recognised teachers on the staff of the Polytechnic. Its functions and terms of reference were to submit recommendations to the Governing Body on matters relating to:
i) the organisation of all courses and classes and the establishment of new courses.
ii) the preparation of syllabuses, time-tables and curricula and the fixing of examination dates and holidays.
iii) the framing of all regulations and conditions governing the admission of students and their promotion or otherwise and the termination of the courses of unsatisactory students
iv) the supervision of all Library Services conducted in the Polytechnic
v) the consideration of any other matter referred to the Board by the Governing Body.

The minutes of the Board were reported in those of the Governing Body. Separate records have not survived before 1960. The Board was dissolved on the formation of the University of Surrey in 1966 and was replaced by the Senate.
