DescriptionThe records consist of official reports issued by the Board of Education on the work of Battersea Polytechnic in general and also on specific sections of the Polytechnic including the Battersea Polytechnic Secondary Schools for Boys and Girls, the School of Art and the Department of Domestic Science. It also includes correspondence between the Polytechnic and the Board of Education relating to these reports. The early reports before 1910 are in typescript while those after this date are in printed, published format.
Administrative HistoryThe Board of Education's Inspectorate was divided geographically into nine districts with the distribution of inspectors arranged to correspond with the Board's three main branches: Elementary, Secondary and Technical. Each branch therefore had its own staff of inspectors. Additional inspectors were appointed for the training of teachers and the work of schools of art, but apart from the powers of inspection they also had an advisory role.
