DescriptionThe records contain reports and correspondence relating to visits made by University of London inspectors to Battersea Poytechnic or to specific departments of the Polytechnic.
Administrative HistoryFollowing the re-constitution of the University of London subsequent to the University of London Act of 1926, their Academic Council took into consideration the relationship between the University and those institutions having recognised teachers. (A recognised teacher was a teacher appointed to the staff of either a School of the University or a public educational institution such as Battersea Polytechnic, which in the opinion of the University of London Senate, offered satisfactory provision for the instruction of internal students or for the instruction of students pursuing courses of advanced study or research.) It was felt that there would be avantages to the institutions and the University if a closer connection were established and it was therefore decided that periodic visits by University of London inspectors should be made to the Departments or Institutions in which teachers were recognised. The visits were planned to be made at intervals of five years and were concerned solely with the work of recognised teachers and the provision for internal students of the University rather than with the general policy of Battersea Polytechnic.

Battersea Polytechnic ran a number of courses which prepared students for university degrees of the University of London or for University Teachers' Certificates
