Administrative HistoryThe origins of the Students' Union can be traced back to an unofficial group known as the 'Common Room Committee,' which was founded shortly after the opening of Battersea Polytechnic in 1894. By 1907 the number of full-time students had increased to the extent that the Committee became properly organised and recognised by the Principal. Two committees became necessary, one for the day students and another for the evening members. These became known as the Day and Evening Students' Representative Councils.

These would appear to have been a self perpetuating body with members for one year chosen by members of the previous year. As the number of evening students slowly dwindled so the importance of the Evening Students' Representative Council became less, eventually leaving just the Day Students' Representative Council which did not drop the 'Day' from its title until 1928.
