DescriptionOfficial Reference Number: GB 1881 UNIS

Administrative History:
To complete their Master of Arts at the University of Surrey, students deposit their dissertations at the University Library. Dissertations for the degrees of Dance Studies, Somatic Studies/Labananalysis, and Physical Theatre are given to the National Resource Centre for Dance, by agreement of the Department of Dance Studies.
In the first years of the MA in Dance Studies, students were required to deposit a bound copy of their dissertation at the NRCD as well as at the library. The dissertations already in the NRCD's possession have been added to this collection.

Scope and Content:
Dissertations for a Master of Arts in Dance Studies, Somatic Studies/Labananalysis, or Physical Theatre.
ArrangementOn the shelves, the entire collection of bound volumes is filed alphabetically by author. On the catalogue, the culled dissertations have been catalogued alphabetically by author on an annual basis. (Dissertations already at the NRCD were catalogued in no particular order.)
Accompanying videos are separated from the bound volume and housed in the video cabinets. They must be located via their reference number.
Custodial_HistoryMA students in the Department of Dance Studies, University of Surrey submit two bound copies of their dissertation, one kept by the department, the other deposited at the University Library. In 2003, the library began a policy of keeping only the most recent 9 years of dissertations. That year, the library undertook a large cull of dissertations up to and including those submitted in 1994. Each year since then, one year's worth of dissertations has been culled. In 2011 the library culled MA dissertations from 2002-2007.
Academic departments are given the opportunity to claim their dissertations and move them to their own offices (the volumes are withdrawn from the library's catalogue). Otherwise, the dissertations are destroyed.
Because of space limitations, the Department of Dance Studies cannot take the culled dissertations, but it asked the National Resource Centre for Dance to add them to its archive to ensure their survival and accessibility. In 2003, the NRCD took possession of around 90 dissertations from 1987 to 1994. In the years since then, it has received 7-10 annually.
In the early years of the MA in Dance Studies, students were required to deposit a bound copy of their dissertation with the NRCD. The 22 dissertations already in the NRCD's possession have been included in this collection, and their reference number changed from XZB to UNIS/B.
In some cases, later MA students have also deposited a copy of their dissertation to the NRCD, particularly if the subject is particularly relevant to the NRCD's archive collections. As they are usually unbound, these are catalogued as papers files, and when the bound volume is culled, it will replace the file.
